Conservative reactions to the limited release of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and image appear in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions raise significant questions about the information may be concealed beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded increased transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Release
But, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are entirely redacted, and many of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
Yet some do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for action that preceded the congressional approval to pass a law requiring the files' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative influencers were given physical folders of materials that included no previously unseen data.
